Metro
When they draw the rock music map of Chicago, this Lakeview club will be at dead center.

The Scene
Metro has two levels, with an L-shaped bar tucked off to the right on the main floor. When the audience hits capacity (1,100), try to strike a balance on the wide, shallow audience area between the crush and mosh of the front with the free range of the back, where columns hamper good viewing and low ceilings muffle the sound.

The Draw
Metro has booked more than 5,000 bands from all over the rock spectrum since 1982, including "before the bandwagon" gigs by R.E.M. in 1982 and Nirvana in 1989, as well as shows by established superstars Bob Dylan (1998) and James Brown (1984). When Chicago was sold as the next alt-rock hot spot in 1993, breaking bands performed here, and some, like Liz Phair and the Smashing Pumpkins, practiced in the club's private top-floor performance space.
House of Blues
Lush setting, excellent acoustics, and strong bookings silence naysayers.

The Scene
House of Blues opened its fourth restaurant/concert hall at the base of the famous "corn cob" buildings of Marina City in November 1996. A host to a mix of blues, jazz, funk, rap and world musicians of varying popularity, it also offers a decent meal. HOB's upstairs music hall is decorated with Southern outsider art. Sightlines on the main floor are terrific, sound is almost as stunning, and if you don't mind standing (little seating available), this is a fabulous place. There are private boxes reserved for VIPs and industry, but standing room in the lower balcony is open.

The Draw
Don't let the name fool you: Everyone under the sun plays here, from hip-hop groups (Common, Black-Eyed Peas) to alterna-rockers (Goldfinger) to "Behind the Music" bands cashing in (Skid Row, Berlin) and blues giants (R.L. Burnside, Taj Mahal).
